Self-Rescue Devices
In the event of an emergency, the use of self-contained self-rescue (SCSR) devices (also referred to as air packs) help ensure that workers will have clean air until they are clear of the crisis.
There are several potential uses of an SCSR device during a surface mine emergency, as follows:
- Avoiding smoke inhalation during a fire
- Avoiding inhaling toxic fumes after a chemical spill
- Providing fresh air for a worker who is trapped in a confined space
It is also acceptable to use an SCSR device in situations where dust particulates may interfere with proper breathing.
