Surface Mining Development
Because surface mining can be harmful to the environment, the process of finding and evaluating a site for mining can take years. Mining exploration is typically performed by expert geologists who use specialized equipment to sample, survey, and map prospective mine sites.
Once a site has been explored and determined to be a viable location to perform surface mining, development and construction of the site begin. Mine development involves assessing topography, climate, community impact, and other factors that may affect the function or layout of the mine.
In addition, mine development plans must include a land reclamation strategy that outlines the process for restoring the integrity of the land once the mining effort is complete. Dumping locations for topsoil and waste must also be determined before any work at the mine site is started.
