SMART - Risk Management for Operators
Just as miners can implement the UMWA Risks process to prevent accidents in the workplace, operators have the SMART program to reduce risk and ensure continual health and safety improvements in the workplace. To ensure that the program is effective, it must be continually revised to solve problems created by changing specific risks.
SMART is an acronym that stands for the following:
STOP - Operators must isolate each step in a task and identify past and potential accidents.
MEASURE - Operators must evaluate the identified risks and examine ways to mitigate any hazards.
ACT - Operators must enforce controls to reduce or eliminate any hazards.
REVIEW - Operators must conduct frequent inspections to observe work practices and audit safety violations to identify root causes.
TRAIN - Operators must develop an action plan to address safety violations and train miners on safe work practices.
