Surface Powered Haulage Equipment
Surface powered haulage equipment refers to any mobile hauling equipment used to transport personnel, supplies, rock, mine waste, coal, and any other materials used in mining procedures at surface mining sites. There are many different types of surface powered haulage equipment, including the following:
- Dozers
- Utility trucks
- Water trucks
- Front-end loaders
- Haul trucks
- Conveyors
Powered haulage accidents accounted for 99 fatalities at metal and nonmetal mines between 2001 and 2012. Seventy-two of these fatalities occurred at surface mine sites. Some of these fatalities and injuries could have been avoided given adequate safety training, strict adherence to safety procedures, and well-maintained vehicles and roadways. Consequently, safety training for each person working in or around surface powered haulage equipment is imperative to preserve life, prevent loss of property, and avoid unnecessary costs.
