Traffic Signs & Warning Signals
Traffic signs and warning signals are critical safety features for transportation safety at mine sites.
Traffic Signs
Traffic signs ensure that traffic flow on mine sites is well-organized and controlled. Because mine properties frequently switch between different traffic patterns, warning signs are particularly useful to give advanced warning of a change in traffic pattern.
Traffic signs include the following:
- Steep grade warnings
- Intersection signs
- Curve signs
- Narrow roadway signs
- One-way signs
Warning Signals
MSHA requires that visible warning signals be used when parked mobile equipment creates a hazard for people in other mobile equipment. Additionally, mobile equipment (other than forklifts) carrying loads that project beyond the sides or more than four feet beyond the rear of the equipment must have a warning flag at the end of the projection. If visibility in the area is low, these loads must have a warning light at the end of the projection.
The flags or lights may be attached to the end of the projection, or they may be carried by people walking beside or behind the projection.
