Transportation Hazards
Transportation hazards at mines are very easily avoided with the proper combination of safe work practices and vigilance. Nevertheless, the hazards presented by transportation consistently create significant risks in the workplace. This is mostly due to human carelessness and inattention. It is easy for drivers to become overconfident or complacent if they have a lot of experience driving for mine operations. Drivers must fight against that complacency, and instead, adopt a vigilant attitude toward safety at all times.
The following are a few best practices drivers should follow to stay safe while at work:
- They should always be alert and drive defensively.
- They should be familiar with the audible and visual warning signs used at the mine site.
- They should be familiar with how their vehicles operate. They should always read the operating manual that accompanies the vehicle.
- They should always wear their seatbelts.
- They should pay close attention to their surroundings at all times.
