Transportation of People
Many hazards exist when transporting people in mobile equipment at surface mine sites. Consequently, MSHA has established a number of stringent rules concerning how people are transported on these mine sites. The following are some of those regulations:
- Do not transport people in the following manner:
- In or on dippers, forks, or clamshells
- In beds of mobile equipment or railcars
- On top of loads in mobile equipment
- Do not transport people to and from work areas in overcrowded mobile equipment.
- Do not transport people on the outside of mobile equipment or in other locations that expose them to hazards.
- Do not transport people on conveyors, unless the conveyor is designed for human transportation.
For a complete list of the prohibitions placed on the transportation of people at surface mine sites, see 30 CFR 56.9200.
