Walls & Benches
Other structural hazards at surface mines include falling rocks, collapsing rocks, and landslides, which lead to serious mining incidents. The design and layout of the working faces of the mine must be structured in a way that minimizes the danger of falling material. This can be accomplished by constructing a benching system instead of having a steep pit wall. The mine operator must ensure that this bench wall does not lead to unsupported overhanging or undercutting.
