Accident Prevention

There are many ways to prevent emergencies, such as designing risks out of a scenario. For example, if running a cable for a power tool could create an electrocution hazard, try to replace the corded tool with a battery-powered tool. The hazard is removed completely.

Another way to prevent accidents is to stay alert to your surroundings. Understand the hazards that exist and the potential hazards that could develop. Look up from your work at regular intervals. Make sure that the area around you is still safe. Some protective equipment can make it hard to see or hear what is going on nearby, unless you intentionally look around.

One of the best accident prevention techniques is good communication. Standardized hand signals, audible alerts, and clear signage can communicate hazards and help workers understand each others' intentions. If it is possible to speak with other miners, it is better to over-communicate your activities than to leave co-workers to guess what you are doing.
