Chemical Hazards

A chemical hazard exists whenever a chemical threatens physical health or safety. You must understand the various kinds of hazardous chemicals and how to handle them. The Department of Transportation (DOT) lists hazardous chemicals within nine classes called the Hazard Classification System. The nine hazard classes are:

  • Class 1 - Explosives
  • Class 2 - Gases
  • Class 3 - Flammable liquids
  • Class 4 - Flammable solids; substances liable to spontaneous combustion; substances that emit flammable gases when in contact with water
  • Class 5 - Oxidizing substances and organic peroxides
  • Class 6 - Toxic and infectious substances
  • Class 7 - Radioactive material
  • Class 8 - Corrosive materials
  • Class 9 - Miscellaneous dangerous goods
