Dredgers

Dredgers typically use suction or buckets to collect material from underwater. The biggest hazard is drowning. Always use approved life jackets according to mine procedures. Stay in close communication with other personnel so that they will quickly recognize a problem if something happens to you.

Another hazard is getting caught by suction equipment and their associated currents. Avoid entering the water during active dredging. Flotation devices may be ineffective if you get caught at the mouth of a dredging pipe. Follow mine dredging procedures carefully to avoid this scenario.

A third hazard is being struck by ejected material. Always aim nozzles in a safe direction away from personnel, boats, and machines before turning on the system.
