Explosives

The explosives used in surface mine blasting operations represent a significant physical hazard. Title 30 §56, Subpart E regulates how explosives should be used. Miners who handle explosives should regularly review these and other regulations, as well as industry best practices and site-specific rules. The following list summarizes some of the rules that help miners manage explosive hazards.

  • Clear rubbish, brush, dry grass, and trees (under 10 feet tall) at least 25 feet from storage facilities.
  • Keep combustible materials at least 50 feet from stored explosives.
  • Store explosive material to use oldest stock first.
  • Keep vehicles carrying explosives in good condition.
  • Carry explosives and detonators in separate containers.
  • Wait 15 minutes before entering a misfire blast area. If using blasting caps or safety fuses, wait at least 30 minutes.
  • During electric storms, discontinue blasting operations, and go to a safe location.
  • Do not smoke within 50 feet of explosive material.
  • Keep explosives from temperatures over 150 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Protect explosives from impact, tampering, and dropping during loading.
