Fall Prevention & Protection

Falling from heights and slipping are a leading cause of injury and death at surface mines. Ladders, catwalks, wet surfaces, places with objects underfoot, highwalls, machines, and many other locations can be dangerous if miners do not take the necessary precautions. Even a fall from six feet can be lethal. There are two categories of safety best practices to protect yourself from falling injuries.

First, prevent a fall by using guardrails, fall arrest systems, floor hole coverings, harnesses, non-slip footwear, and similar means to decrease the chance of falling. Avoid standing on the top step of a ladder, and secure or stabilize it before climbing.

Second, since no one can predict a fall, protect yourself by wearing personal protective equipment, like helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, and gloves, to limit or distribute the force of impact. Use safety nets in critical locations.

Mine procedures that integrate both fall prevention and fall protection best practices can keep miners safe. Follow these procedures any time there is a risk of falling.
