Material Handling

Moving materials by hand can be difficult and even hazardous. Heavy objects can strain miners' muscles and cause back and joint problems. This can happen over time or all at once. It is important to practice good lifting form and, if necessary, to use back supports, also called back belts or abdominal belts. Lifting with another miner's help can reduce strain. Using a machine is another possibility.

The location of lifting makes a big difference. Restricted height environments require miners to stoop or kneel, which decreases lifting capacity. Lifting objects overhead can add extra strain. Avoid awkward postures whenever possible. Instead, practice good ergonomics by lifting carefully and using your body's strongest muscles to do the work.
