Noise
Exposure to loud noises, especially for prolonged periods, can cause hearing loss or damage. The maximum daily exposure is as follows:
- 85 decibels for 8 hours
- 88 decibels for 4 hours
- 91 decibels for 2 hours
- 94 decibels for 1 hour
- 97 decibels for 30 minutes
Avoid exposure to excessive noise by wearing approved hearing protection. The best protection is achieved using both ear plugs and ear muffs. Other systems, such as equipment chutes, can help limit noise as well.
Two easy ways to protect yourself include increasing the distance between yourself and the sources of noise, and limiting the amount of time you are exposed to noise.
MSHA prohibits exposure over 90 decibels within an 8-hour work shift. Monitoring equipment can help miners track noise exposure.
