Tool Use, Maintenance & Repair
The misuse of hand tools causes numerous injuries every year. Hot tools can burn. Heavy tools can crush. Sharp tools can cut or puncture. Limit these risks by using the appropriate tool for each job. Keep tools in good working condition. Clean them when you are finished, and sharpen them when necessary. Always put tools away when you are finished with them to protect them, to find them the next time, and to prevent stray tools from causing trips, falling from heights, or damaging equipment.
Welding tools require special attention. Always close valves when cylinders are moved, when torches and hoses are left unattended, and when tasks are completed. Store oxygen cylinders away from flammable liquids and grease. Do not allow cylinders to become completely empty or fall below minimum pressures. Ensure that torches are clean before you use them. Always wear appropriate eye, face, and skin protection.
With all tools, repair or replace worn or damaged parts promptly.
