Water Hazards, Pits, & Spoil Banks
There can be many water hazards at surface mine operations. Digging operations may leave land features with poor drainage, causing water to collect. Good communication and flotation devices should be used during dredging operations that occur in bodies of water.
Pits are holes dug to look for mineral deposits, geological voids, and other often narrow holes in the earth. Confined spaces are small areas in a mine that contain unique hazards. Confined spaces often require special entry precautions, such as a permitting system, an attendant, and a confined spaces supervisor. Miners who work at surface mines with confined spaces should pursue specific training in confined space operations.
Spoil banks and spoil tips are collections of unwanted minerals gathered into piles. They pose threats similar to highwalls, such as collapse. Use caution when operating near spoil banks. Limit the time spent close by, and avoid undercutting.
