Aerial Lift Controls

The controls for aerial boom lifts can vary from one model to another. There should be one set of controls at the platform and one set of controls at the base of the lift. All controls must be plainly marked as to their function and be located within easy reach of the operator. The operator controls on the lower level can override the upper controls on the platform.

Only one designated person should operate the controls. Except in emergencies, the lower controls should only be operated with permission from the worker in the elevated lift. Operators must never allow anyone to tamper with, service, or operate a machine from the lower control station while workers are on the platform, except in an emergency.

Workers must be trained and certified for the type of aerial boom lift they will be using and demonstrate competency in the operation of the lift controls.

Controls should be positioned and designed so they cannot be inadvertently activated when struck by other equipment or by a worker's body. Controls should have recessed buttons or protective covers. Equipment without these safety measures should be refitted with controls that protect against inadvertent operation.
