Aerial Lift Collision Hazards

Workers must be made aware of the potential hazards of being caught in the aerial boom lift mechanism. Fatal crushing and pinching injuries have occurred when the aerial boom lift failed at a joint location.

  • Never place hands or feet under the platform of the aerial boom lift unless performing maintenance on the lift.
  • Keep hands, arms, and other body parts inside the platform and guardrails while working on the platform.
  • Avoid loose clothing that could be caught in the mechanisms of the lift.
  • Never move the equipment when workers are on the platform in an elevated position unless otherwise specified by the operator's manual.
  • Never rest or support the lift's basket or platform on or against any other structure.

The space around the base of an aerial boom lift should be clearly marked with barriers or signage when it is in use to prevent the accidental injury of a pedestrian or other worker being caught in or below the lift.
