Air-Purifying Respirator (APR)
An air-purifying respirator (APR) has "filters, cartridges, or canisters that remove contaminants from the air." They use the air of the worksite, pass this air through the air-purifying element, and then provide it to the user through a hose.
APRs are also referred to as airline respirators. This image shows an example of an air-purifying respirator (APR).
APRs provide clean air for long periods of time. They are lightweight, which makes them easier to use than heavier respirators. They are typically for situations with extended work periods in atmospheres which are not immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH).
In the following slides, you will learn about three specific types of air-purifying respirators:
- Particulate respirators
- Gas & vapor respirators
- Combination respirators
