Confined Space Hot Work Training

Training is one of the most important requirements for performing hot work in confined spaces. Job descriptions and appropriate training vary within job functions. If you are an authorized entrant or operator performing hot work operations, you must receive the following hot work training before entering a confined space:

• Welding training - all hot work is potentially dangerous and welding can generate welding fumes, UV light, sparks, excessive noise, and skin injury. This training covers hazards specific to welding.
• Respirator training - this covers training on how to properly wear respiratory protective equipment in confined spaces and the types of respirators required during hot work.
• Air monitoring - this training covers proper air monitoring equipment and techniques in a confined space conducting hot work.
• Ventilation - this training focuses on proper ventilation procedures during hot work.
• Communication - communication is essential in confined spaces. This training covers most effective communication techniques specific to hot work.
• Lockout or tagout - this training covers procedures on how to properly isolate hot work machines or equipment to prevent any hazardous interactions before and after lockout.
• Lighting - this training covers appropriate lighting within a confined space when utilizing different hot work techniques.
• Use of first aid - this training covers first aid procedures in case of injury.
