Confined Space Hot Work
Welding in confined spaces requires that additional safety procedures be followed in addition to those outlined on the entry permit. A written hot work program and a hot work permit are implemented when conducting "hot" operations within a confined space. Hot work activities include those that may result in sparks, fire, molten slag, or hot material that has the potential to cause fires or explosions. Specific activities include cutting, brazing, soldering, thawing pipes, torch applied roofing, grinding, and welding.
Hot Work Program
The Hot Work Written Program contains identification of hot work spaces, personnel responsibilities, hot work standard operating procedures, fire prevention measures, and training requirements.
Hot Work Permit
The hot work permit outlines safe work practices, engineering controls, and PPE requirements that must be followed. Similar to confined spaces, hot work training should be based on the contents of the written program and revised to ensure all procedures are current. The permit must be retained for one year from the date of entry.
