Confined Space Safety Controls

OSHA states that the highest degree of safety can be attained when using engineering controls, which eliminate or reduce exposure to hazards. Acquainting yourself with the conditions within a confined space will allow you to become a more attendant or entrant.

Engineering Controls

Engineering controls are used to remove a hazard or reduce the likelihood of injuries and illnesses. Engineering controls try to control a hazard at its source. Examples of engineering controls include:

  • Ventilation
  • Initial design specifications
  • Substitution with less harmful material
  • Enclosure, isolation, or change of a process

Administrative Controls

Administrative controls and personal protective equipment are frequently used with existing processes where hazards are not well controlled. OSHA defines administrative controls as those measures that are aimed at reducing employee exposure to hazards. These measures can include things such as additional relief workers, effective policies and training programs, exercise breaks, and rotation of workers.

PPE

Personal protective equipment, or PPE, consists of clothing and other equipment worn to help minimize exposure to hazards. Examples of PPE include:

  • Hardhats
  • Ear protection such as earmuffs and plugs
  • Eye protection such as goggles
  • Fall protection such as harnesses
  • Respiratory protection and rubber insulating equipment such as gloves, sleeves, and blankets
  • Foot protection such as safety shoes
