Aviation - Carbon Dioxide, Solid (Dry Ice)
When shipped by itself or used as a refrigerant for other commodities aboard an aircraft, carbon dioxide, solid (dry ice), contains special handling requirements that can be found in §175.900. The operator must ensure that the ground staff is informed that the dry ice is being loaded on board the aircraft.
In addition to notifying the ground staff of its presence on board an aircraft, the operator must ensure that suitable arrangements based on the aircraft type, the aircraft ventilation rates, the method of packing and stowing, whether animals will be carried on the same flight, and other relevant factors have been put in place before transporting dry ice. For arrangements between the shipper and the operator to accommodate dry ice, see §173.217.
If additional dry ice is added to a shipment of dry ice that has already been packaged appropriately by a shipper and accepted by an operator, the operator must ensure that the information provided to the pilot-in-command and the marking on the ULD accurately reflects the revised quantity of the dry ice.
