Aviation - Plutonium Shipments

Plutonium shipments that are subject to 10 CFR 71.88(a)(4) regulations must comply with the following requirements:

  • Packages must be secured and restrained to prevent shifting under normal conditions of transportation.
  • Packages with a gross mass of less than 40 kg (88 pounds) and both a height and diameter of less than 50 cm (19.7 inches) must not be transported with other cargo carrying a Division 1.1 label, and must be stowed on the main deck or the lower cargo compartment in an area that supports its weight. No other cargo can be stored near these packages.

Packages exceeding the size and weight limitation in §175.704 (b) must not be transported near other Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, Class 4, Class 5, or Class 8 materials. In addition, these packages must be securely cradled and tied down to the main deck of the aircraft in a manner that restrains the packages from the following internal forces:

  • Upward - 2 g
  • Forward - 9 g
  • Sideward - 1.5 g
  • Downward - 4.5 g
