Aviation - Equipment with Lithium-ion Batteries

Lithium-ion battery-powered wheelchairs and mobility aids are permitted as checked baggage with operator approval as long as it meets the following conditions:

  • The batteries must meet the requirements of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria as specified by §173.185
  • The operator must verify that the battery terminals are protected from short-circuits, the battery is securely attached to the wheelchair or mobility aid, and all electrical circuits have been inhibited.
  • Mobility aids must be secured against movement in the cargo hold and protected from damage by the movement of baggage, mail, or other cargo.
  • If the battery is designed so that it can be removed, the battery must be removed and carried in the passenger cabin or cargo compartment. In addition, the battery must be protected from short circuits by insulating the terminals.
  • The pilot-in-command must be informed of the location of the mobility aid with an installed battery or the location of the lithium battery when removed and carried in the cabin.
  • Passengers should make advance arrangements with the operator.
  • Lithium metal batteries are forbidden aboard a passenger-carrying aircraft.
