Aviation - Mobility and Medical Devices Exceptions

Battery-powered wheelchairs or other similar mobility aids for use by passengers whose mobility is restricted by a disability, their health or age, or a temporary mobility problem may be permitted as checked baggage with operator approval as long as they meet certain criteria. The criteria are based on the type of battery used.

The pilot-in-command must be notified that the wheelchair, mobility aid, or battery is onboard, along with its location. Passengers should make advance arrangements with the operator whenever possible.

Wheelchair and mobility device exceptions are listed under §175.10 and also pertain to the personal use exceptions.

Implanted medical devices

Implanted medical devices in humans or animals that contain hazardous materials (such as a heart pacemaker containing radioactive material or lithium batteries) and radiopharmaceuticals that have been injected or ingested are permissible for personal use only.

Medical thermometer

A small medical or clinical mercury thermometer for personal use is permissible when carried in a protective case in carry-on or checked baggage.
