Aviation - Hazardous Materials Regulations

Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Parts 100 through 185, govern the transportation of hazardous materials. The Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) are found in Subchapter C, Parts 171 through 180. All US carriers and foreign air carriers operating flights to or from US airports must comply with the 49 CFR requirements governing the acceptance, storage, loading, and transportation of hazardous materials by air. Everyone involved in the transportation of hazardous materials must be familiar with, and have current knowledge of, the HMR.

The Codes of Federal Regulations are structured by title, subtitle, chapter, subchapter, and parts. Part 175 is specific to the transportation of HAZMAT through carriage by aircraft. In addition to understanding general requirements covered in the HAZMAT General Awareness and Security training course, air carriers and shippers must comply with additional regulations listed under §175, as well as certain regulations within 14 CFR Parts 21, 23, and 91.
