Aviation - Non-Bulk and Bulk Markings

Non-bulk Markings

Each person who offers a hazardous material for transportation in a non-bulk packaging must mark the package with the following information found on the HMT:

  • Proper shipping name
  • Identification number
  • Technical name
  • Special permit information
  • Full name and address of the consignor or consignee

Bulk Markings

You must mark a bulk packaging containing hazardous material with that material's identification number. Each bulk packaging marked with a proper shipping name, common name, or identification number must remain marked when it is emptied unless it is sufficiently cleaned of residue and purged of vapors to remove any potential hazard. If you use a bulk packaging under the terms of a special permit, plainly and durably mark "DOT-SP" on it, followed by the special permit number assigned.

ID number markings are required on each side and each end for any bulk packaging with a capacity of 3,785 L (1,000 gallons) or more and for cylinders permanently installed on a motor vehicle trailer. If the capacity is less than 3,785 L, then the ID number marking is only required on two opposite sides.
