Aviation - Pilot Notification

The notification to the pilot-in-command must specify the following information:

  1. Proper shipping name, hazard class, and identification number of the material as specified in the ICAO Technical Instructions or regulations in §172.101.
    • For Class 1 materials, the compatibility group letter must also be displayed.
  2. Total number of packages.
  3. Net quantity or gross weight for each package, except those containing Class 7 radioactive materials.
    • For a shipment with multiple packages, only the total quantity and an indication of the quantity of the largest and smallest package at each loading location need to be provided.
  4. Location of the packages aboard the aircraft.
  5. Confirmation that there are no damaged or leaking packages aboard the aircraft.
  6. For Class 7 radioactive materials: the number of packages, overpacks or freight containers, their category, TI, and their location.
  7. Date of the flight.
  8. Telephone number of a person not aboard the aircraft from whom the information contained within the notification of pilot-in-command can be obtained.
  9. Confirmation that the package must be carried only on cargo aircraft if its transportation aboard passenger-carrying aircraft is forbidden.
  10. If applicable, an indication that a hazardous material is being carried under terms of a special permit.
  11. For UN1845, Carbon dioxide, solid (dry ice), only the UN number, proper shipping name, hazard class, total quantity in each hold aboard the aircraft, and the airport at which the package(s) is to be unloaded need to be provided.

The aircraft operator must retain a copy, or an electronic image, of each notification of pilot-in-command for 90 days at the airport of departure or the operator's principal place of business. The information must be readily accessible at the airport of departure and the intended airport of arrival for the duration of the flight leg.
