Aviation - Training Requirements
All HAZMAT employees who perform work functions subject to the HMR must be trained in accordance with the HMR. The requirements include initial training as well as recurrent training of HAZMAT employees to ensure they maintain the required knowledge and skill sets. Initial training is required within 90 days for new employees or employees who assume new HAZMAT-related responsibilities. Requirements for air carriers and shippers are found in Part 172, Subpart H of the HMR and §175.20.
Each HAZMAT employer must:
- Ensure that each HAZMAT employee is trained and tested.
- Certify that each HAZMAT employee has been trained and tested.
- Develop and retain records of current training for each HAZMAT employee.
Once initial training has been completed, the HAZMAT employee must go through recurrent training at least once every three years. However, the FAA, under §14 CFR, requires that air carrier employees must be retrained at least every two years. It is the responsibility of a HAZMAT employer to ensure its HAZMAT employees are thoroughly instructed in the current provisions of the HMR. HAZMAT training received from a previous employer or other source may be used provided that a current training record is obtained.
