Waterways - 49 CFR Part 176 Subpart D

Hazardous materials authorized to be transported by vessel can be carried on board a vessel in a transport vehicle, freight container, or portable tank as long as the conditions found in §176.76(a) are met.

Exceptions for transport vehicles, freight containers, and portable tanks are found in §176.76 (b-f).

Power-operated Industrial Trucks On Board Vessels

A power-operated truck (including a power-operated tractor, forklift, or other specialized truck used for cargo handling) must not be used on board a vessel in a space containing a hazardous material unless the truck conforms to the requirements of §176.78. The COTP may suspend or prohibit the use of cargo handling vehicles or equipment when that use constitutes a safety hazard.

For specific regulations and exceptions for power-operated industrial trucks on vessels, be sure to review §176.78 in depth.
