Detailed Requirements for Class 4 - Flammable Solids, Class 5 - Oxidizers and Organic Peroxides, and Division 1.5 Materials

Stowage

The following regulations must be followed for Class 4 - Flammable Solids, Class 5 - Oxidizers and Organic Peroxides, and Division 1.5 materials:

  • Class 4 - Flammable Solid material and Division 5.2 - Organic Peroxide material must be kept as cool as possible, protected from sources of heat, and away from potential sources of ignition.
  • Division 5.2 organic peroxide material must be stowed away from living quarters or access to them. This type of material not requiring temperature control must also be protected from sources of heat, including radiant heat and strong sunlight, and must be stowed in a cool, well-ventilated area.
  • Division 1.5 or Class 5 - Oxidizers and Organic Peroxides material cannot be stowed in the same hold or compartment with any readily combustible material, such as a combustible liquid, a textile product, or with a finely divided substance, such as an organic powder. Additionally, these materials cannot be stowed in a hold or compartment containing sulfur in bulk; or in any hold or compartment above, below, or adjacent to one containing sulfur in bulk.

Note that as mentioned previously, Division 4.2 (spontaneous combustible material) and Division 5.2 (organic peroxides) are no longer assigned to PGII as of July 5, 2016.
