Waterways - 49 CFR Part 176 Subpart L

Detailed Requirements for Division 2.3 Poisonous Gas and Division 6.1 Poisonous Materials

General Stowage Requirements

Each package that contains a POISON GAS, POISON INHALATION HAZARD, or POISON label must be stowed clear of living quarters and any ventilation ducts that lead to living quarters. These packages must also be separated from foodstuffs, unless they are both in different closed cargo transport units. A package bearing a POISON LABEL and the "PG III" mark must also be stowed away from foodstuffs.

If a package has both a POISON GAS label and a FLAMMABLE GAS label it must be segregated as a Division 2.1 flammable gas material.

Each package of Division 2.3 poisonous gas material or Division 6.1 poisonous material that also bears a FLAMMABLE LIQUID or FLAMMABLE GAS label must be stowed in a mechanically ventilated space, kept as cool as possible, be protected from sources of heat, and stowed away from potential sources of ignition.

Leakage or Sifting

A hold or compartment containing a leaked or sifted package of a Division 2.3 poisonous gas or Division 6.1 poisonous material must be thoroughly cleaned and decontaminated after the cargo is unloaded and before the hold or compartment is used for the stowage of any other cargo.
