Waterways - Class 1 Loading and Unloading
When loading and unloading Class 1 - Explosive Materials, packages must not be thrown, dropped, rolled, dragged, or slid over each other or over a deck. Also, when Class 1 - Explosive Materials are stowed in a hold below another hold where cargo is being handled, the hatch in the deck dividing the two holds must have all covers securely in place.
Only a safety hook or a hook closed by wire may be used when handling drafts of Class 1 - Explosive Materials. For further regulations concerning drafts, see §176.104 (c) (1-5).
You must not use a combination woven rope and wire sling or any sling that is formed by use of an open hook when handling Class 1 - Explosive Materials.
Specific loading and unloading requirements of Class 1 - Explosive Materials may be found in §176.104. Precautions for loading and unloading can be found in §176.148-§176.164; we will begin discussing precautions in the next section.
