Waterways - Class 1 Stowage
Detailed Requirements for Class 1 - Explosive Materials
When stowing Class 1 - Explosive Materials, ensure that they are stowed in a cool part of the ship and are kept as cool as practical while on board. If the materials are stowed below deck, the space must be dry. Additionally, Class 1 - Explosive Materials must be stowed as far away as practical from any potential source of heat or ignition. These materials must not be positioned closer to the ship's side than a distance equal to one-eighth of the beam or 2.4 m (8 feet), whichever is less.
Bilges and bilge sections must be examined before loading Class 1 - Explosive Materials on board any vessel. You must also ensure that all residue from previous cargo has been removed.
Class 1 - Explosive Materials must also be securely stowed and locked to prevent shifting in transit and unauthorized access. General stowage conditions for Class 1 - Explosive Materials can be found in §176.112-§176.116.
Portable Magazine
Because of the nature of Class 1 - Explosive Materials, each portable magazine used for the stowage of Class 1 - Explosive Materials on board vessels must follow certain regulations found in §176.37.
