Waterways - Hazardous Materials Table
The Hazardous Materials Table (HMT) is the core of the HMR. The HMT lists alphabetically, by proper shipping name, the materials that the US DOT has designated as hazardous materials for the purpose of transportation. It provides the references to find information on requirements for shipping papers, package markings and labels, quantity limitations, placarding, and storage specifications.
The HMT is located in §172.101. It contains over 3,000 proper shipping names of the substances most commonly shipped or carried as hazardous material. The table is formatted in 14 columns with ten major headings, numbered 1 through 10.
Anyone who works with HAZMAT must learn how to use the HMT in order to comply with the HMR. Because the HMT is still an integral part of carrier waterways transportation, we will go through a brief overview.
