Waterways - Key Terms
The following are other important terms you should know that are applicable to this training:
A compartment is any space on a vessel that is enclosed by the vessel's decks and its sides or permanent steel bulkheads.
Dunnage is lumber no less than 25 mm thick (.98 in) that is laid against structures or used to fill voids or fit around other cargo to prevent damage during transportation.
A hold is a compartment below deck that is used exclusively for the carriage of cargo.
The master of the vessel is the person in charge of an unmanned vessel or page.
A magazine is an enclosure designed to protect certain goods of Class 1 - Explosive Materials from damage by other cargo and adverse weather conditions during loading, unloading, and when in transit, and to prevent unauthorized access.
