Waterways - General Stowage Requirements

Supervision

Hazardous materials must be stowed in a manner that allows for inspection during the voyage, removal from a potentially dangerous situation, and the removal of packages in case of a fire. Packages of hazardous materials must be secured and dunnage used to prevent shifting in any direction.

Marine Pollutants

Marine pollutants must be properly stowed and secured to minimize the hazards to the marine environment without impairing the safety of the ship and all those onboard. Where stowage is permitted "on deck or under deck," under deck stowage is preferred, except when a weather deck provides equivalent protection. Where storage is "on deck only," preference must be given to stowage on well-protected decks, or to stowage inboard in sheltered areas of exposed decks.

Handling Break-bulk Hazardous Materials

When handling break-bulk hazardous materials, extra care must be taken. You must not use metal bale hooks or equipment designed to lift or move cargo with pressure exerted on the package if the equipment can damage the materials.

Stowage of Barges Containing Hazardous Material

Stow barges that contain hazardous materials for which only "on deck" stowage is authorized above the weather deck, and vent to the atmosphere.

On Deck Stowage of Break-Bulk Hazardous Materials

Secure packages containing break-bulk hazardous materials by enclosing in boxes, cribs, or cradles and proper lashing, including shoring and bracing. On deck stowage requirements can be found in §176.74.
