IATA Class 1 Primary Hazards
All explosive articles, substances, and devices should be considered an extreme hazard if they are involved in a fire. Potential hazards of explosive articles and substances include:
- Thermal heat
- Projectiles - may project fragments up to 1,600 m (or 1 mile)
- Fire - may be ignited by heat, sparks, flame, friction, or shock
- Toxic - fire may produce irritating, corrosive, or toxic gases
- Blasts
The characteristics of an explosion depend on the following parameters:
- Ambient temperature
- Ambient pressure
- Composition of the explosive material
- Nature of the ignition source
- Surrounding area
- Amount of combustible material
- Time before ignition
- Rate of combustion
