IATA Class 2 Packing Instructions

Cylinders and closed cryogenic receptacles must be constructed and closed to prevent any loss of contents, which might be caused by normal conditions of transport such as vibration or changes in temperature, humidity, or pressure. It is important that any parts of the packaging that are in direct contact with the dangerous good cannot be weakened or affected by those dangerous goods. Refillable cylinders and receptacles must not be filled with a different gas or mixture than what was previously contained in the packaging, unless necessary operations for the change in material were conducted.

Refillable cylinders and receptacles must not be filled with a different gas or mixture than what was previously contained in the packaging, unless necessary operations for the change in material were conducted.

Cylinders and receptacles must be filled according to provision 5.2.0.6 to ensure that working pressures are appropriate for the substance contained. When filling reactive gases and gas mixtures, you must take into consideration decomposition. Cylinders must also not be overfilled.

The valves must be designed to prevent accidental release of contents. One of the following methods can be used to protect the valve:

  • Valves are placed inside the neck of the cylinder or closed cryogenic receptacle and protected by a threaded plug or cap.
  • Valves are protected by caps with vent holes.
  • Valves are protected by shrouds or guards.
  • No valves are used.
  • Outer packaging is used.

Cylinders and closed cryogenic receptacles must not be offered for transport if they are leaking, damaged to the extent that the integrity of the packaging may be affected, or if the required certification, testing, and filling marks are illegible.
