IATA Class 5 Desensitization

Some organic peroxides decompose explosively, especially when they are confined. These substances must be modified through desensitization or they need to be packaged to reduce the explosive characteristics. Organic peroxides are desensitized by adding organic liquids or solids, inorganic solids, or water in order to ensure safe transport. There are two types of diluents used for desensitization:

  • Diluents Type A - organic liquids that are compatible with the organic peroxide and that have a boiling point of at least 150° C (302° F); may be used to desensitize all organic peroxides
  • Diluents Type B - organic liquids that are compatible with the organic peroxide and that have a boiling point of less than 150° C (302° F) but not less than 60° C (140° F) and a flash point of not less than 5° C (41° F); may be used to desensitize all organic peroxides provided the boiling point of the liquid is at least 60° C (140° F) higher than the SADT in a 50 kg package
