IATA Class 6 Division 6.2 Patient Specimens
Patient specimens with a minimal likelihood of containing pathogens are exempt from Division 6.2 classification if they meet the following packaging specifications. The patient specimen must be packaged so that it is leak proof. The package must be marked with the words, "Exempt human specimen" or "Exempt animal specimen," as appropriate. And, the packaging must have a leak-proof primary receptacle, and leak-proof secondary packaging, and an outer packaging of adequate strength with at least one surface having minimum dimensions of 100 mm x 100 mm. Absorbent material must be used between the primary receptacle and secondary packaging if liquids are involved, so that in the event of a leak, the substance will not reach the outer packaging. If multiple fragile primary receptacles are placed in a single secondary packaging, they must be individually wrapped or separated to prevent contact.
