IATA Class 7

Radioactive material is used in many applications, such as in healthcare for diagnosis and treatment, the production of plastics, measurement tools for engineers, smoke detectors, and mobile phones. Several million shipments of radioactive materials are transported every year.

Radioactive material is covered under Section 10 of the DGR. The regulations in Section 10 are based on the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material (2012 Edition), Safety Standards Series No. TS-R-1 SSR-6, IAEA, Vienna (2012).

These Regulations do not apply to the following:

  • Radioactive material implanted or incorporated into a person or live animal for diagnosis or treatment
  • A person who has been subject to accidental or deliberate intake of or contamination from radioactive material and is being transported for medical treatment
  • Radioactive material in consumer products that have received regulatory approval
  • Natural material and ores containing naturally occurring radionuclides
  • Non-radioactive solid objects with radioactive substances present on any surfaces in quantities not exceeding the limits for contamination
