IATA Class 7 Hazards
Radioactive contamination can lead to the impairment or destruction of certain body tissues, cancer, hair loss, radiation sickness, radiation burns, and death. Protection from radiation is achieved by containing radioactive contents, controlling external radioactive levels, preventing criticality, and preventing damage by heat.
A radiation protection program must be in place to provide protection from the hazards of transporting radioactive material. This program must monitor occupational exposure and establish emergency provisions in the event of an accident. In addition, quality assurance programs are required to ensure the design, manufacture, testing, documentation, use, maintenance, and inspection of all radioactive material is in compliance with these Regulations and other provisions required by the competent authority.
