IATA Class 7 Industrial Packages
Industrial packaging may be used for Low Specific Activity (LSA) material and Surface Contaminated Objects (SCOs). Industrial packages are divided into three types: IP-1, IP-2, and IP-3.
Type IP-1 packages must meet the general package requirements, plus the smallest overall dimension must not be less than 10 cm. Type IP-2 must meet the criteria for Type IP-1 packages, plus it must prevent the loss or dispersal of contents and more than a 20% increase in the maximum radiation level at any external surface. Type IP-3 packages must meet the criteria for Type IP-1 packages, as well as the following requirements:
- A security seal to indicate if the package has been opened
- Tie down attachments
- Withstand component temperatures ranging from -40° C to 70° C (-40° F to 158° F)
- Meet international and national design standards
- Positive fastening device on containment system
- Withstand a reduction in ambient pressure to 60 kPa
- Loss or dispersal of contents would be prevented and no more than 20% increase in the maximum surface dose rate at any external surface when subjected to a water spray test, drop test, stacking test, and penetration test
