IATA Class 7 Packing

There are seven different types of packages for radioactive materials covered by these Regulations:

  • Excepted packages
  • Industrial package Type I
  • Industrial package Type 2
  • Industrial package Type 3
  • Type A packages
  • Type B(U) and B(M) packages
  • Type C packages

There are additional requirements for packages containing fissile material or uranium hexafluoride. These packing requirements vary based on the particular radionuclide involved, the quantity of material, and whether the material is Special Form or fissile. If the package is packed in compliance with these Regulations, it is assigned a Transport Index number, which indicates the relative degree of radiation hazard. Excepted, Industrial, and Type A packages are not designed to be accident-resistant, whereas Type B and Type C packages are designed to be accident-resistant.
