IATA Class 8

Corrosive substances are classified as Class 8 dangerous goods. According to the DGR, corrosives are substances which by chemical action can cause severe damage when in contact with living tissue or, in the case of leakage, will materially damage or destroy other goods or the means of transport. For example, corrosive substances can eat through metal or cause electrical wires to short-circuit.

The primary hazards for Class 8 substances include the following:

  • Inhalation may be harmful.
  • Contact may burn skin and eyes.
  • Fire may produce irritating or toxic gases.
  • Liquid vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation.
  • It can impair the structural integrity of metal surfaces.
