IATA Classifications
Classification describes how to classify dangerous goods into one or more of nine UN hazard classes and, if applicable, one of three UN packing groups. The nine classes are determined by the type of hazard presented, while the packing groups relate to the applicable degree of danger within the class. The nine hazard classes are:
- Class 1 - Explosives: This includes any explosive articles, substances, and pyrotechnic devices, such as fireworks and ammunition.
- Class 2 - Gases: This class is divided into three divisions for flammable gas, non-flammable gas, and poisonous gas.
- Class 3 - Flammable Liquids: This class consists of liquids or liquid mixtures that give off flammable vapors.
- Class 4 - Flammable Solids; Substances Liable to Spontaneous Combustion; Substances which, in Contact with Water, Emit Flammable Gases.
- Class 5 - Oxidizing Substances and Organic Peroxides: This class is separated into a division for inorganic substances that may combust when mixed with oxygen, and a division for self-reactive organic substances
- Class 6 - Toxic and Infectious Substances: This class is divided into toxic substances, such as mercury, and infectious substances, such as viruses and bacteria.
- Class 7 - Radioactive Material: This class is for material containing radionuclides.
- Class 8 - Corrosives: This class contains corrosive substances that can dissolve organic tissue or severely corrode metal.
- Class 9 - Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods: This class contains various hazardous substances that do not fit into the other classes, such as dry ice, magnets, and lithium batteries.
