IATA Provisions for Pilot-in-Command

All relevant dangerous goods information must be communicated by the operator to the pilot-in-command as soon as possible before departure. This information must be written and be provided to any personnel with responsibilities for operational control of the aircraft, such as the flight dispatcher and flight operations officer. The information given to the pilot-in-command must include the following:

  • Air Waybill number (when issued)
  • The date of the flight
  • The proper shipping name and UN or ID number
  • The class or division and any subsidiary risk(s)
  • The packing group
  • The number of packages, net quantity, or gross weight (including the units of measurement), if required on the Shipper's Declaration (include the transport index and exact loading location for radioactive material)
  • Whether the package is restricted to cargo aircraft only
  • The airport at which the package(s) is to be unloaded
  • An indication that the dangerous goods are being carried under a State exemption, if applicable

The information provided to the pilot-in-command must have a signed confirmation from the personnel responsible for loading the dangerous goods that there was no evidence of damage or leakage.

The pilot-in-command must provide indication that he or she has received this information. In addition to the copy that the pilot-in-command has readily available, another copy must be retained on the ground.

In the event of an emergency, the pilot-in-command is responsible for informing the appropriate air traffic services of the dangerous goods on board.
